About shoulders training

The deltoid muscle has three distinct heads: anterior (front), lateral (side), and posterior (rear). The anterior head is heavily recruited during all pressing movements, so it rarely needs extra isolation. The lateral and posterior heads require targeted work for balanced shoulder development. The rotator cuff muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis) stabilize the joint and should not be neglected.

Training tips

How to train effectively

  • Prioritize lateral raises and rear delt work. The front delt gets enough volume from pressing; the side and rear heads need direct training.
  • Use lighter weights with controlled tempos on isolation movements. The deltoid responds better to time under tension than to heavy, swinging reps.
  • Warm up the rotator cuff before heavy pressing. Band pull-aparts and external rotations prepare the stabilizers.
  • Overhead press with a slight lean back (5 to 10 degrees) to keep the bar path over your center of gravity without overarching.
Common mistakes

What to avoid

  • Raising the arms too high on lateral raises. Stopping at or just below shoulder height keeps tension on the lateral delt. Going higher shifts the load to the upper traps.
  • Pressing behind the neck. This places the shoulder in an impinged position under load and increases injury risk for most people.
  • Ignoring the rear delts. Underdeveloped posterior deltoids contribute to rounded posture and shoulder instability.
